Arena decision delayed again

The decision about where the Bristol Arena will be located has been delayed again. When Mayor Marvin Rees was elected, he delayed construction of the arena at Temple Meads and commissioned a ‘value for money’ report. The scope of the report was later expanded to include an alternative site at the old Brabazon hangar in Filton.

Mayor Rees said he would announce his final decision at a Bristol City Council cabinet meeting on 1st May, but the report has not yet been made available to the Council’s all-party scrutiny committee who have asked for enough time to review the detail of the value for money assessment. Councillors have also urged that as much information as possible about the two sites is made available to the public.

At a meeting in City Hall on 13th April, councillors were told the final value for money assessment will only be “noted” on 1st May. A final decision may have to be delayed until after a by-election on 25th May for the Westbury-on-Trym ward, since major decisions are not usually taken during an election period.
