BDP drugs worker and volunteer manager Sophie Wilsdon, who is a musician herself, said: “Often musicians struggling with drug or alcohol issues give up performing as a result. I also I know people who’ve pawned all their instruments as a result of their addictions, but would still love the opportunity to perform. There are also lots of people who have never accessed treatment or help who may also like to get involved. We are hoping the orchestra will act as a gateway to get people performing again.”
The orchestra will be led by conductor and local composer Jon James and Sophie, and will run for the next eight weeks. A performance is planned for the end of March.
BDP is now seeking funding for the orchestra project to continue. Anyone who wants to find out more about the orchestra and get involved can call Sophie on 0117 9876000.
