Children and parents from Hillcrest Primary School held a demonstration on Tuesday (11th July) in support of the much-loved lollipop man on the Wells Road, Totterdown. Paul Whitmell has helped children cross the busy road for 15 years, but there is a proposal to make him redundant as part of Bristol City Council’s budget cuts.
Despite the crossing being ‘traffic light-controlled’ parents believe it will be unsafe without Paul to help the children across the road. Concerns were raised, by parents and the lollipop man, that drivers regularly fail to stop at the red light.
