Windmill Hill Community Centre, Vivian Street

We thought you may like to know a little more about Windmill Hill Community Centre, Vivian Street. It’s formed out of two old church halls that once belonged to St Michael and All Angels. When maintenance became an issue for the Church in 1972, the halls were leased for 25 years to the newly formed Windmill Hill Community Association. In 2000 a loan was taken out to buy the Community Centre from the Church. This loan was paid off at Christmas 2018, so the Community Centre now belongs to the Windmill Hill Community Association which has been a registered charity since 1997 (Charity No. 1066925).
The Community Centre has always been, and still is, run completely by volunteers, so any activities such as  decorating, maintenance, purchasing, organisation, bookings and security are all done by volunteers. We are always looking for people to give us a hand, so if you have any particular skills you think may be useful, please do let us know!
Should you wish to join as a member, this costs £12 a year (£18 for a family of 2 adults and children, £9 for a senior). You can complete a membership form at the bar whenever it’s open or mail us at membership@whca.org.uk. This membership allows you to purchase drinks at our bar as well as helping support the Community Centre financially. Our bar is open from 8.00pm every evening (6.00pm on a Tuesday and Sunday). The bar has a Club Premises Certificate to sell alcohol which only allows us to serve members. This is a different licence to pubs who have a Premises Licence so they can serve any member of the public who comes in. The upside of this is that we sell very reasonably priced drinks and have a carefully curated wine list! The profits from the bar all go back into the Community Centre.
As well as all the classes that are run here  (see below) we also have events run by volunteers such as the occasional board games night, book club, Christmas Party, New Years Party, Jazz night and a monthly quiz. The quiz is this Friday starting at 8.30pm if you’re interested! All details are on our Facebook page or website www.whca.org.uk
The large hall can be hired for events, and the small hall can be hired for meetings outside of bar opening times The large hall is a very popular space for children’s parties – we  have two 3-hour sessions at the weekends – 11am-2pm and 3-6pm for a very reasonable £65 which includes the use of the kitchen.
The large hall can also be hired with use of the bar for which a TEN (Temporary Event Notice) can be obtained so we are able to serve non-members. We are only allowed to have 15 of those in a year. Bookings enquiries can be made to bookings@whca.org.uk
Membership fees, hire charges and profits from the bar are the revenue which runs the Community Centre. We rely on the goodwill of volunteers and the continuing support of members, hirers and users of the classes to keep this old building going. It’s a daunting task sometimes but with the support of the community behind us we carry on looking to the future!
Best wishes and hope to see you soon!
