The draft Local Plan allows for up to 7,500 new student bed spaces across Bristol. Other proposed locations are: 800 on the University’s main campus; 200 in Clifton; 1,000 in Stoke Bishop; 1,000 along the ‘Frome gateway’ stretching from Broadmead towards the north east, and; 500 in ‘Western Harbour’.
The plan indicates that new student accommodation should be car-free, although disabled parking and disabled access should be provided. Students will be “strongly discouraged” from bringing cars to Bristol during their studies.
It is not clear how the University of Bristol or Bristol City Council will insist that students stay in university halls of residence, rather than deciding to rent local houses (an issue that has become a significant problem in Clifton, Redland, Cotham and other areas in the north of the city).
Members of the public have until 24th May 2019 to comment on the draft policies in the local plan review.
