Big Spaces in BS3
Attached (below) is the second version of our survey of parks, allotments, local nature reserves and other green spaces in BS3. There are still some gaps. Please contact us on mywildbedminster@virginmedia.com if you have additional information.
The idea is to establish the wildlife potential of these spaces and to encourage people to think about how this can be enhanced. Most of the spaces have support groups drawn from the local community, but some of these groups are not very strong. A few spaces seem to have no support group.
One way to think of these larger spaces is as green islands in an urban sea. A significant issue for wildlife is how to move from island to island. Smaller spaces such as community and domestic gardens are part of the answer. Streams and railway lines help too. Remember ‘every window box counts’.
Big Spaces in BS4, BS13 and BS14
We are working on this and hope to publish an updated survey shortly. Contact us if you want a copy of the first survey and/or want to contribute to the second survey. Does anyone want to help with a survey in North Bristol or part thereof?
Winter Birds etc.
The report on winter birds is in preparation and will be circulated shortly. Hopefully, many of you will have started to monitor butterflies, moths, beetles, dragonflies or whatever you fancy in local parks or your own garden. We’ll collect your data later in 2020, but please continue to share interesting finds and pictures on our facebook or with this newsletter. We are still keen to discover colonies of hedgehogs and slow worms. If you see either of these, please let us know where and when.
Spreading the Word
I know that some of you are keen and competent with social media. Please use your contacts to encourage wildlife gardening, sharing wildlife information, forming and supporting park groups and in other ways. If we are to make a really significant advance in wilding our parts of the city, we need to gain the active support of lots of local people.
