TRESA is backing the campaign to save Jubilee Pool in Knowle. This is the nearest pool for many people who live in Totterdown, and Hengrove Leisure centre is a difficult journey away for those without a car. The petition to save the pool has over 4,700 signatures and below are 51 reasons to save the pool!

The Jubilee was a vital part of my childhood. I still treasure the winner’s certificate for one width (yes one width!) back crawl when in the 162 Cub pack. When a pupil at the lost Wells Rd school we learnt life saving there with the feared Mr. Taylor, whose means of punishment would never be tolerated now! My husband used the pool to practice when he was a National swimmer back in the 50s and our son had lessons there as a small boy in the mid 90s. This pool serves many schools in the Brislington and Knowle area as the venue for swimming lessons, without which they would be forced to look further afield at greater cost, or more likely stop swimming lessons altogether. This reason alone should be enough to keep the pool open, let alone the positive impact it has by giving the locals a cheaper alternative to pools such as Easton Leisure Centre, or gyms which require hefty membership fees. This pool is an institution. I took my daughter to lessons there from when she was 6 months old. The staff are charming and the period building alone needs to be saved as what could it be other than a pool. It is local to us and we would be so devastated to see it go. daisy l.

I used to live in Brislington just a short distance from Jubilee pool. It is a fantastic and much needed local facility. When I was studying radio and print journalism at South Bristol College, I did a short radio piece on the Council’s then plans to shut small community pools in the city. That was 25 years ago. The Jubilee baths must be protected. Please save it for the people of Knowle and Brislington. Marjory S.
Given that we should be trying to reduce our carbon footprint, suggesting that Hengrove is a nearby alternative (a 1hr30m round trip walk from Jubilee) is a nonsense. And we should all hear in more detail why the powers that be don’t consider the Jubilee pool to be accessible for the whole community. Are these accessibility issues insurmountable? Michael R.
Jubilee is close for me to access. I can’t physically/financially afford to travel to Keynsham or Hengrove. Jubilee is a very convenient location for people, its sessions for adults are always peaceful unlike the pools mentioned above which focus on kids. By closing jubilee you are closing a community hub which will negatively impact on health/well being. I am also sceptical as to the intention….build overpriced flats? Alice W.
