Anyone who has lived in Totterdown for any length of time will have spent at least a few quiet moments up at ‘Zone A’ on Wells Road. There is a certain calm about this small piece of greenery with its fruit trees and bushes, a community mosaic, wildlife and picnic areas. Home to random decorations, flowers, flags and lights as well as community celebrations, dancing and family picnics, Zone A is , in so many ways, a perfect ‘fit’ for Totterdown. We hope that local residents will join and support the reformed TACA to enable a solid ‘Zone A Community’ to protect this rather special piece of land.
The view from Zone A has certainly changed over the years, and more change is on the not too distant horizon as the submission of development proposals this side of the city continues unabated. TRESA as an organisation, and many local residents and businesses, are not against development. We know that houses are desperately needed, as well as new GP surgeries, schools and better transport infrastructure. What many are against is unsustainable development that sees developers trying to push for bigger and higher buildings – inappropriate to this locale in scale and design and with little consideration for those who are likely to live in, or alongside, these proposedly ‘desirable’ dwellings. Little consideration is given to environmental concerns, protection of wildlife, trees or providing a pleasant neighbourhood suitable for all ages, abilities… and budget. TRESA will continue to respond to these applications in a measured way and we hope our community will also take time to comment via the Planning section on Bristol City Council website: https://www.bristol.gov.uk/planning-and-building-regulations/planning
On a more positive front, we are delighted to announce our Totterdown Traders Quiz which Vice Chair, Suzanne Audrey, has pulled together as a ‘thank you’ to our local independents and a reminder to all of what fabulous businesses we have on our doorstep. There is a paper copy included with the latest issue, an electronic one available on our website. DEADLINE FOR ANSWERS IS 18 MARCH so do get quizzing!
