University of Bristol high-rise student accommodation at Temple Quarter

The University of Bristol has announced a joint venture between Campus Living Villages (CLV) and Equitix has been appointed as the strategic development partner for its new accommodation projects. The University’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus will include approximately 1,200 bed spaces in high-rise accommodation, primarily for the use of students studying at the new campus. Work is expected to start in 2019 and it is due to open in 2021/22.

TRESA directors have some concerns about the proposed height of the residential accommodation and the potential impact on the well being of residents. Research has shown:

  • High rise accommodation is associated with higher levels of stress and mental health difficulties
  • Death by suicide is higher in high-rise accommodation
  • Communal areas of high-rise accommodation are more likely to be vandalised and suffer anti-social behaviour, while maintenance is more complex and more expensive
  • Fewer social interactions, and lower levels of perceived community cohesion, are associated with high-rise accommodation
  • According to the NUS, up to 70% of students may experience homesickness
  • Pressures associated with moving to, and studying at, university can distress students with a pre-existing mental health condition, and may cause vulnerability in otherwise healthy students
  • There has been a rise in students accessing mental health services

In 2016 a coroner ordered Campus Living Villages to take action following the death of a student who jumped from the window of her bedroom on the 14th Floor of her student accommodation.
