It isn’t perfect, as it is not on the obvious ‘desire line’ immediately at the bottom of the steps (this is because of sight-lines and safety). But we believe it is a reasonable compromise. It is a zebra crossing, which we believe is a good thing because pedestrians have priority, rather than waiting for lights (that usually favour cars) to change. We hope our members and friends will complete the survey and support the proposals so that this pedestrian crossing can be in place as soon as possible.

Bristol City Council response:
A number of different options to provide a safe crossing of St Luke’s Road in the vicinity of the steps leading to St Luke’s Crescent have been considered, and following a series of design reviews, a preliminary design for a zebra crossing has been completed. This proposal has been issued for consideration by local residents to establish whether there is support for a zebra crossing in the proposed location given that it is not possible to have it immediately at the base of the steps on safety grounds. The consultation period started on the 19th July and lasts until the 14th August 2022.
At the end of this exercise, we will need to review the responses to determine if there is support for the proposal as proposed or whether we need to make any changes. A report on the consultation will be issued summarising the results, at which point we will discuss the outcome with local Councillors to agree a way forward. If this proceeds, we will need to publish a statutory notice to advertise our intention to install a crossing in this location. This is a legal process and gives anyone the opportunity to raise a formal objection to the proposed crossing. This takes some time to prepare and we are anticipating this taking place in November 2022.
Therefore, there are a number of steps that need to be completed before the provision of a crossing can be confirmed.
If confirmed, the detailed design will then be undertaken to finalise the precise details of the design before a contractor can be appointed to undertake the work (potentially Spring 2023).
