The long awaited review of Bristol’s 20mph policy for neighbourhoods starts today, 20th June.
TRESA supports 20mph in Totterdown and throughout our Ward (Windmill Hill). The recent research report by the University of the West of England has shown that 20mph has saved lives, reduced the number of serious accidents and reduced accidents in general.
Totterdown residents are urged to contribute to the review to make our streets safer for all of us. This is your opportunity to comment on the policy overall and to indicate whether there are roads in Totterdown or other parts of the city where it could be improved. One road that has been identified is St Lukes Road, where speeding traffic create a ‘barrier’ between Totterdown, Victoria Park and walking routes to St Mary Redcliffe Primary School, Windmill Hill City Farm and Bedminster. What measures would you like to see to slow traffic down on St Lukes Road? Are there any other roads where you would like to see 20mph improved?
For more information on the consultation go to www.bristol.gov.uk/20mphreview
In relation to Windmill Hill Ward, you will be asked to comment on St Lukes Road and St Johns Lane, but you can add other roads where you think there is a problem.
More details about the contents of the Review, and other initiatives to make our roads safer, are below:

Bristol City Council is seeking your views on how the 20mph speed limit operates in practice. Changes to speed limits (whether upwards or downwards) would only be considered where supported by the evidence such as public opinion/perception/local experience, changes to roads/environments/land use and speed data.
A survey list of roads for review is provided, grouped by wards. You will need to complete the ‘About you’ section before you can access the areas. Once you have completed your comments for one area, you will be directed back to the main menu where you can select another area if you wish to do so. You can also comment on any other road in the area at the bottom of each survey.

The council is also working in primary and secondary schools to encourage pupils to walk, scoot and cycle to school to help develop healthy lifestyles at an early age and reduce congestion by schools creating a safer environment for all pupils. This is supported by Modeshift Stars and Living Streets.
