In July 2018 an outline planning application was approved, in principle, for a new mixed-use campus to be built on the former Royal Mail Sorting Office site and part of Temple Island within the Temple Quarter area.
The outline planning application comprised a new mixed-use campus of up to 82,395 sq.m of floor space including up to 1,500 student beds, as well as alterations to Cattle Market Road and the provision of an energy centre. Except for access, all matters relating to the appearance, landscaping, layout and scale were reserved for subsequent approval. The outline application was supported by an illustrative masterplan which showed how the layout of the site could be achieved, although the design was not fixed at this stage.
The masterplan featured:
- Landmark buildings for teaching, learning and collaboration, with a focus on future technology; and
- Student accommodation.
Changes were also proposed to the public realm, including new pedestrian and cycle links to the surrounding area, landscaping and associated infrastructure works.
Planning update 2019:
The University would now like to share the latest masterplan for the campus and to consult with stakeholders and the community on the detailed proposals for the student residential accommodation, prior to submitting the first of the Reserved Matters Planning Applications.
A further round of public consultation on the detailed proposals for the academic buildings will follow later in the year and will inform the second Reserved Matters Application in the Autumn.
